Uniform and Clothing Guidance

At Henry Fawcett Primary, we see children as whole human beings and this includes how they dress. What a child wears should never be a barrier to their learning, their belonging, or feeling part of our school community.

For some families, school uniforms are one way of creating a sense of belonging and making mornings simpler. Many children enjoy wearing it as part of our shared identity, and we’re happy for families to continue doing so. At the same time, we know that clothing is also a way for children to express who they are. Feeling comfortable, confident, and fully themselves matters too.

We also understand that some children have sensory needs, and the feel or fit of certain clothes can affect their comfort and ability to focus. We encourage families to choose clothing that supports their child’s wellbeing.

We welcome all children  whether they wear uniform or other clothing  and support families in making choices that work best for them and their child.

Suggested Clothing for School

  • Dark-coloured sweatshirt or cardigan (Henry Fawcett items are available from the office)
  • White or blue polo shirt
  • Dark trousers, tracksuit bottoms, leggings or skirt (dark grey, black, or navy)
  • Any shoes that are safe and suitable for play.
  • A bag that can carry books and a water bottle (Henry Fawcett book bags are available from the office if preferred)

PE Days

  • Blue t-shirt (Henry Fawcett PE tops are available, or any plain blue t-shirt)
  • Dark shorts or tracksuit bottoms
  • Trainers

Outerwear

We spend time outside every day, in all weathers, so children will need a warm coat on cold days, and a waterproof jacket in rainy weather. In summer, we encourage sun hats.

Accessories and Expression

Children are encouraged to express their cultural heritage, gender identity and individuality through their clothing, hair, and accessories. We only ask that clothing and accessories are safe for active play and learning. If you have any concerns or queries we are happy to discuss.

With this in mind, jewellery is limited to small stud earrings and watches only. Other types of jewellery should not be worn to school.

Keeping clothing safe

We ask parents to write their child's name inside all clothing so that we can reunite lost clothing with their owners.

As a school that values children’s right to play and explore, we understand clothing may get messy or worn during active learning. We ask parents to take this into account when choosing school clothes.
